Where is the Gulf crisis heading? An interview with H.E. Saoud Al Thani on Inside Story – Aljazeera English Channel

His Excellency Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the Federal Republic of Germany, was a guest on Al Jazeera English Channel on Sunday, 23 July 2017 in its episode  on Sunday, 23 July 2017 along with Mr. Andreas Craig, associate professor at King's University London, Mr. Osama Shehata, associate professor at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies on its episode. ’Where is the Gulf crisis heading?’’

In response to the question about the timing of H.H the Emir Speech, H.E the Ambassador said, ‘’The choice of delivering the speech on this particular time demonstrates a clear wisdom, especially after the allegations and accusations against Qatar, as well as to the hacking of Qatar News Agency website’’. ‘’ The speech was to hail the Qatari citizens and residents for their solidarity, harmony and defiance as well as an appreciation to the efforts of the Kuwaiti Mediation of His Highness the Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad to resolve the crisis.

H.E. Sheikh Saoud Al Thani stressed that Qatar is open to dialogue but says any talks must respect Qatar’s sovereignty and it should not be in a form of orders by one party against another. 

In regard to consequences of the Qatar crisis on the long term, H.E the Ambassador said that the impact will not only affect the Gulf countries, but also will reach the global market as the State of Qatar produces between 30% -40% of global energy, and is the largest producer of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in the world. H.E. Saoud Al Thani confirmed that Its in the interest of all parties to find a solution to this blockade as dialogue is the only solution to resolve the current   conflicts

H.E. Saoud Al Thani reply to the question about the reaction of the Qatari people to the Emir's call to diversify the country's economic resources: "Qatar has put forward its plan through the Vision 2030 to diversify sources of economic income and eliminate the main dependence on Hydrocarbon. Qatar has diversified its internal and external investment. The current crisis was an opportunity to the State of Qatar to depend on its national products and to diversify the sources of imports. H.E. referred to the support and keen interest of the government in encouraging the business sectors and to the Emir’s call for creative initiatives ideas that will contribute to find solutions and support the diversity of economic resources.

In response to the question of how the State of Qatar will deal with the six demands made by the blockade countries, H.E. the Ambassador replied: "As for the request to close Al-Jazeera, this demand is a flagrant challenge to the freedom of media and expression which is against international rights. For allegations of support of terrorism, these allegations are baseless, and have no evidence. "The headquarter for fighting international terrorism is Qatar. To this regard, Qatar has received international recognition for its efforts in fighting against terrorism. In addition to that Qatar has always applied the international  resolutions , believing in  the sovereignty of any country and not interfering in its internal affairs. The time has come for the four blockade countries  to implement these demands on themselves. H.E. Saoud AL Thani concluded by stressing on the call for wisdom and open dialog which is the only way to resolve the current crisis.
